Cryolipolysis (Fat Freezing)
Commonly known as fat freezing, cryolipolysis is a non-invasive procedure that uses controlled cold temperatures to reduce stubborn, localised fat deposits.

- Duration
- Cycle length is set per area during treatment
- Recovery
- No downtime; the area may feel cold, numb or tender for a few days
- Sessions
- Planned per area; some areas are reviewed for a second cycle after the first is assessed
Overview
Cryolipolysis works on a simple principle: fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the skin, nerves and muscle around them. An applicator draws the treatment area gently into a cup and holds it at a set low temperature for the length of the cycle, while the skin is protected by a membrane placed underneath.
It is a contouring treatment, not a weight-loss treatment. It is aimed at discrete pockets of fat that stay put despite a steady diet and exercise routine, and changes are assessed over weeks as the body clears the affected cells. Suitability and expected results vary between individuals; a consultation always comes first.
Who it may suit
- Localised pockets of fat that persist despite diet and exercise
- Areas that can be comfortably drawn into the applicator
- People at or near a stable weight who want contour rather than weight loss
Considerations
- Not a weight-loss treatment and not a substitute for one
- Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Cold-related conditions such as cryoglobulinaemia, cold urticaria or Raynaud's must be discussed first
- Hernias at or near the treatment site, and recent surgery in the area, need review before booking
What to expect
- 01
The area is marked out and a protective membrane is applied to the skin
- 02
The applicator draws the area in; expect firm suction and intense cold for the first few minutes, which then numbs
- 03
The cycle runs at a set temperature, vacuum and release time, all read from the handpiece
- 04
The area is massaged briefly once the applicator is removed
Preparation
- Eat normally beforehand and stay hydrated
- Wear clothing you do not mind loosening around the area
- Tell Sarah about any circulatory or cold-sensitivity conditions, hernias or recent surgery
Aftercare
All aftercare guidance- Expect redness, firmness, numbness or tenderness in the area for a few days
- Keep moving normally; there is no downtime
- Continue your usual diet and activity so the result is not masked by weight gain
- Report any prolonged or unusual pain so it can be reviewed
Timeline
Numbness and tenderness settle over a few days. Changes in contour are gradual and are usually assessed from around six weeks, with the fuller picture at two to three months.
