Overview

A chemical peel applies a carefully chosen acid or blend of acids to the skin to loosen and lift the outermost layers of dead cells. Different acids work at different depths and suit different concerns, from gentle lactic and mandelic peels to more active glycolic or salicylic chemistries.

Peels may help with dullness, congestion, uneven tone and fine surface texture. The chemistry, strength and contact time are selected after assessment. Suitability and expected results vary between individuals; a consultation always comes first.

Who it may suit

  • Dull or congested skin
  • Uneven tone and post-acne marks
  • Fine surface texture
  • Skin preparing for a rejuvenation programme

Considerations

  • Not performed over broken or sunburnt skin, active infection or cold sores
  • Deeper-toned skin is treated with melanin-safe chemistries and conservative strengths
  • Some peels require a short preparation phase with home-care products

What to expect

  1. 01

Cleanse and degrease of the skin

  2. 02

The peel applied in layers while sensation is monitored; mild tingling or warmth is normal

  3. 03

Neutralised or timed off, followed by a soothing mask and sun protection

  4. 04

Skin may look slightly pink for a few hours

Preparation

  • Stop retinoids and exfoliants 3–5 days beforehand unless told otherwise
  • Avoid sun exposure, waxing and laser for a week
  • Tell Sarah about any recent treatments or medication
  • Expect light flaking from day 2 to day 5 depending on depth; do not pick or peel it
  • Gentle cleanser, moisturiser and daily sun protection only
  • No actives, exfoliation, heat or swimming until flaking has finished

Timeline

Brighter skin as flaking completes, usually within a week. A series of peels, spaced 2–4 weeks apart, builds more even tone over time.
