Understanding microneedling

What actually happens beneath the surface, why sessions are spaced apart, and who tends to benefit most.

Microneedling uses very fine, sterile needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin. The skin responds as it would to any small, well-managed injury: by producing new collagen and elastin as part of its natural repair cycle. That response, rather than the needling itself, is where the change comes from.

Why the wait matters

Collagen remodelling is slow. The first days after a session are about calming and closing; the weeks that follow are when new structure is laid down. This is why results are assessed over weeks rather than days, and why sessions are typically spaced four to six weeks apart to let each cycle complete before the next begins.

Who it tends to suit

  • Uneven texture and enlarged pores
  • Certain types of acne scarring on settled skin
  • Fine lines and early loss of firmness
  • Dull skin that would benefit from renewal

It is not suitable during active breakouts, infection or eczema flare-ups, and some medical histories rule it out. A consultation always comes first for exactly this reason.

What a good session looks like

A thorough cleanse, a numbing cream left to work, even overlapping passes with a sterile cartridge, and a simple, barrier-supporting finish. The skin looks flushed for a day or two. Aftercare is deliberately boring: gentle cleanser, hydration, sun protection, and nothing active for a week.

The most reliable improvements come from patience with the skin's own timelines.
